Culpeper, VA. J. W. Clarke. The community was shocked to hear of the sudden and tragic death of John W. Clarke, which occurred Saturday November 8th, in the Willis Johnston hospital in Richmond, where he was rushed after an accident on Friday afternoon at the lumber yard, where he received fatal injuries.
Mr. Clarke had been connected with the Rose Hill Lumber Company at Penola for 18 years, practically all of the time since leaving his boyhood home near Brandy. He was the oldest son of 'Taylor Clarke and his first wife, Miss Katie E. Jacobs, and after his mother's death, he, with his brothers and sisters, were reared in the home of their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Clarke. To their late home his remains were brought Sunday evening, thence to Stevensburg on Monday, where the funeral services were held at the grave in the Baptist Church cemetery. The officiating ministers were Rev. Mr. Wingfield, of Newport News, and Rev. G. W. Cox, assisted by Rev. J. R. Laughton.
The active pallbearers were: O. C. Taylor, Edgar Jennings, Gatewood Clarke, Louis Callings, George Jeter and B. M. Southers. Honorary: C. B. Payne, F. L. Thomas, F. L. Huffman, Bryant Smith, T. I. Martin, McPherson Blair. Taylor Griffin and W. B. Clark. Accompanying the body from Richmond were: Louis Callings, B. M. Southers, George Jeter, Mr. and Mrs. L. D. George, of Penola, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Jennings, Mr. and Mrs. 0. C. Taylor, Mr. and Mrs D. H. Kelly and Miss Odessa Clarke. They were joined by Mr. and Mrs. McPherson. Blair, of Staunton. Mr. Clarke was about forty years of age and unmarried.
He is survived by his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Clarke, and two half-brothers. Russell and Watts Clarke, of Brandy. Three sisters, Mrs. Walter Hitt, of Pittsburgh, Mrs. D. H. Kelly, of Richmond, Mrs. McPherson Blair, of Staunton, and two brothers. Dan Clarke, of Alexandria, and George Clarke, of Culpeper.
