LeRoy F. “Lee” Schwanke, Sr., 77, of Livingston [Montana] died Sunday evening, September 21, 1997 at Livingston Memorial Hospital. Vigil was 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 23 and Mass of the Christian Burial will be 100:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 24, both at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Rev. Dale Yurkovic will act as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schwanke was born January 19, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Herman and Jeanette Schwanke. When he was still a young boy, the family moved to Livingston where he attended schools, graduating from Park County High School in 1938. He then entered the U.S. Air Force and served on 54 missions as a tail gunner on B-26 bombers in Europe during WWII. On August 6, 1943 he married Nellie Quintana in Denver, Colorado. Following his discharge in 1945 he returned to Livingston and worked for a time at Jack Hasty’s service station. In 1952 he purchased the Sport Restaurant which he owned and operated until 1965. In 1966 he went to work as the maintenance and custodial foreman at Park High School, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church; V.F.W., American Legion and Livingston Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife – Nellie Schwanke of Livingston; a son and his wife – LeRoy F. “Fred” and Carol Schwanke, Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; and adopted daughter – Irene Quintana of Livingston; a sister – Lois of Billilngs, MT; two grandsons – LeRoy Schwanke III and Jay Schwanke, both of Columbus, OH and several nieces and nephews.

If so desired, memorial may be directed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church stained glass window fund or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
