Funeral services for George G. Hickoff, prothonatory of Clinton County, who died suddenly at the Lock Haven Hospital yesterday morning from a heart attack, will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Welsh Funeral Home at Lock Haven.
Born in Mill Hall, Mr. Hickoff before entering politics taught school for 35 years, 27 of them being at McElhattan. Previous to that, from 1881 to 1890, he had been employed by James Murphy Renovo, as bookkeeper.
His political career was perhaps one of the most colorful Clinton County has ever known. His first public office was that of County Auditor, which he held for two terms, after which he sought the office of Prothonotary.
He had been very active in the office, always being one of the first office holders to report for work each morning at the Court House.
He had been a member of the Renovo Lodge I.O.O.F. for the past 50 years and a member of the Church of Christ.
Besides his wife Emma, he is survived by four sons Edward [Edgar] H. of Emporium, Harold O. of McElhattan, George A., and Ralph J. of Lock Haven. A stepdaughter Mrs. Robert McKinney [Beulah Camp], McElhattan, one brother, Thomas J. Hickoff, Mill Hall; and two sisters, Mrs. Emma E. Sweitzer, Mill Hall, and Mrs. Mary A. Bartholomew, Lock Haven, also survive.
About to complete his fourth term as Prothonotary, Mr. Hickoff was named as the Republican party's choice for that office.
Adrian C. Dickey, Republican county chairman, upon hearing of Mr. Hickoff's death, expressed sympathy at the passing of the veteran office holder, and planned to call a meeting of the county committee late this week or early next week to name a substitute candidate.
Mr. Hickoff's son Ralph will probably be permitted to carry on the office until January 1.
