Mary Cassie Harris, 95, of Casey, died at 7:55am Sunday, October 23, 2005, at the Heartland Manor Nursing Center in Casey.

Public funeral services were held Tuesday at Markwell Funeral Home, Casey. Visitation was two hours prior to services at the funeral home. The Rev. Kevin Small officiated. A private family service was held on Wednesday. Burial was in Bellair Cemetery.

She was born Nov. 28, 1909 in Jasper County to John Francis and Charlotte Buckner McDaniel. She married Don Thomas Harris, Oct. 12, 1928, in Bellair. He died Feb. 15, 1984.

Also preceding her in death were one son, Wendell LeRoy; two brothers, Arthur and Charlie McDaniel; three sisters, Amy Cramer, Ellen and Elma McDaniel; two half-sisters, Ethie McDaniel and Tincie Boyd; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Harris; a grandson-in-law, Doug Staley; and a special niece, Opal Washburn, and nieces and nephews.

Surviving are one son, Maurice (Lynda) Harris; two daughters, Marilyn (Bob) Sinclair and Maurice (Richard) Howe; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Harris was a homemaker. At the age of 10 years, she became a member of the New Hope ("Hickory") Cumberland Presbyterian Church where her parents were active members. She attended regularly for over 90 years, until her health no longer permitted her to attend. During that time, she served 24 years as an elder, taught Sunday School classes most of her mature life, and was involved in mission projects, summer camps, vacation Bible school, and loved it all. She also enjoyed going with friends and neighbors to churches of other denominations to worship God together.

Three years after her husband died, she bought a home in Casey and lived there 16 years. During this time, she enjoyed pretty good health, she kept a positive attitude, and enjoyed being with and helping other people. But as her strength weakened, she gave up her home and moved into Heartland Nursing Center in October 2002, where she served as president of Residence Council of Heartland Manor Nursing Center.
