The son of Edmund Rawson and Martha Allen, Samuel married Mary "Molly" Thwing in 1785, and they had eight children, Rebecca, Livia, Turner, Olivia, Ruel, Sophia, Elias and Samuel Rawson, Jr.

Samuel served as private in Captain Martin's company, Col. Joseph Whitney's regiment, under Major General Spencer, during the American Revolution.
