John Edward Moreland passed away peacefully on April 23, 2013 surrounded by loving family.
Born in 1921, John spent his childhood roaming the corn fields and fishing the streams of rural Indianola, Illinois.
Later moving to Boulder, he attended the University of Colorado (CU) earning a Bachelor's degree in Accounting and a Master's degree in Finance. During WWII he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army.
In 1947 John started his 30 year career with CU in the accounting department, ultimately serving the last 14 years as the Treasurer and Director of Finance. Among his many accomplishments at CU, and as an avid CU Buff fan, John was most proud of his successes in securing the funding for several CU landmark buildings including the Dal Ward Athletic Center and CU stadium press box. He was a recipient of the prestigious Robert L. Stearns Award as well as numerous other recognitions.
After retiring in 1977 from CU, John held financial positions at Garrett Bromfield and the University of Denver ending his working career as the VP and Treasurer of the CU Foundation.
John loved the Boulder community and believed strongly in public service. He lent his time and many talents to several organizations which included serving as Chairman of the Board of the Boulder Humane Society, as Chairman of the American Red Cross Board, as Board President of the CU Credit Union, and for a decade as a Board member of the Public Employee's Retirement Association.
Of his many interests, John most enjoyed fishing the Colorado rivers, reading, playing golf, and spending time with family and beloved pets.
John was predeceased by his first wife of 47 years, Lilah H. Moreland and his second wife, Monique A. Moreland. He is survived by four children: Johnna Davis (Ron) of Littleton, Co.; Susan Moreland of Greenbrae, Ca.; Richard Moreland of Boulder; Wendy Moreland (Bruff LeVan) of Boulder; three grandchildren: Shelby Davis, Shanie Davis and Kendall Hodson; and one great grandson, Ty Davis. He will be dearly missed by all.
A private family gathering was held to honor John. No additional services are planned, however, memorial donations may be made to the Tru Hospice Care of Lafayette or the Boulder Humane Society on John's behalf.
