Will Buard "Bill" Birch, the first son of Edna and Lester Birch, was born July 5, 1917, in the Birch home near Scottsville, KS. He attended the public school in Scottsville and graduated from Beloit High school in 1935. He worked for Lee N. Hartman, Texaco consignee in Hays, KS, and the Texas Company in Lincoln and Omaha, NB. from 1939-1942. Bill joined the Army in 1942 and served until 1946. He entered as a draftee and was a 1st. Lt. when he was discharged. He served seven years in the Reserve. He served in the Quartermaster, Transportation and Signal Corps, serving in New Zealand, New Caledonia, and Hawaii. On June 21, 21, 1944, in Omaha, NE he married Loraine Ellen Elmborg, daughter of John Samuel and Mary Johnson Elmborg. Loraine was a stenographer until her marriage. They moved to Denver in 1946 where Bill continued working for Texaco. Loraine and Bill had three children: Kathleen Ann, Steven Lester, and Martin David.

In 1952 Bill went to work as a Plumbing Supplies, Mfg. representative and formed a manufacturing agency with two associates in 1959. This interest was sold in 1971 after Bill suffered a heart attack. Bill and Loraine then purchased a motel in Walsenburg, CO.in 1972 and operated it through June 1976, when they sold it and moved back to Denver. Bill's hobbies included stamp collecting, photography, gardening and traveling. In their later years they traveled to Hawaii, Spain and Europe. Bill and Lorraine sold their home and moved into an apartment complex in 1999. In Mar. 2000 Loraine suffered a stroke and she died on Jan 1, 2001, and Bill died Jan 18, 2004.
