Edward Altmann loses life in Tuesday's storm. June 12, 1900. On Tuesday morining Edward Altmann was struck by lightning while seeding his farm in Cassey Twp. He was standing on his drill to avoid the dust and thus received full force of the shock. Death was probably instantaneous as life was extant when assistance came a few minutes after the accident. Dr. F. C. Patterson of Lisbon was summoned, but of course could do nothing. The horses on the drill were stunned, and did not rally for two hours. The funeral was held from the house yesterday. The Rev. H. Dieter officiating, and it was largely attended, there being 75 teams in the procession. The interment was made in the Lutheran Cemetery in Shenford. The news of the sudden death made a painful sensation all over the Country. Mr. Altmann was a popular and highly respected young man.
The tragedy is all the more pathetic from the fact that he was married only 2 months ago to Miss Kate Muth, a lady from South Dakota. He was the son of Julius Altmann and had spent all his life in Ransom County. He carried no life insurance but leaves some real and personal property. The family have the sympathy of all in their sorrow."
