R,B. Reynolds was Youngest War Veteran. Old Soldier Dead Who Served Four
years Before he was eighteen. Twice woundedduring service in Great National
struggle; Employed at Government Depot.

Reuben Bowen Reynolds, age 73, possibly the youngest man in Jeffersonville
who served throughout the civil war, died at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at his
home at 817 Meigs Avenue.

Mr Reynolds who ahd long been crippled on account of a bullet wound suffered
during the war, had been in ill health for a long time and had been confined to
his home for the past three years. Ten days ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis.
A native of Clark County and a member of one of its best known families. Mr Reynolds
was among the most widely known men of Jeffersonville. He was born at Blue
Lick April 25, 1847. The son of Mr. & Mrs V.S. Reynolds. At the age of fourteen
when the call to arms was heard he enlisted during 1861 in the federal armies and
served through four long years of war in Company H, Thirty-eighth Indiana Infantry.
He was one of the last few local survivors of that regiment f which the late Isaac
Brinkworth of this city served as Lieutenant Colonel.

The Thirty-eighth saw much service and Mr. Reynolds was twice wounded, at
hickamauga Park and at Perryille. He was mustered out on April 18, 1865, one
week before completing his 18th year, having served four years with the cloors.

After discharge Mr. Reynolds was for a time engagd in railroading and later was
for may years employed at the United States quartermaster's depot. For years
he served as a watchman at the main entrance and only retired about the time that
the United States entered the world war when the duties of this post increased
many fold over its peacetime services of a younger and stronger man.

Mr Reynolds was twice married and is survived by his second wife who was Miss
Eva Park when he married her Marcch 29 , 1888. Besides his widow he is
survived by two sons and two daughters, Emmons Reynolds, Tipton, IN; Mrs
Phonea Brumbley, Washington, IN.; Mrs O.G. Brenner and Herbert Reynolds,
of Jeffersonville, There are also brother and sister, William M. Reynolds of Ohio
Falls and Mrs Lydia Perry, Jeffersonville. Many other more distant relatives
reside in the city and county

Mr Reynolds was a member of the Presbyterian Church, of the Grand Army of
the Republic and of the Knights and Ladies of Security. He was widely known
and had many friends. He was of a sociable disposition and liked nothing better
than to meet and mix with his friends. While he had dropped largely out of the
public eye during recent years on account of his ill health he is remembered by
many and his death will be regretted by a large number of acquaintances and
friends.
