Melzar was the son of William Dinsmore (1780-1818) and Submit Belding (1782-1831). Grandson of Capt Abel Dinsmore and Esther Sanderson, all of Conway MA, possible descendents of John Dinsmore of Ashmead Scotland. Capt Abel Dinsmore was in the Revolutionary War.

Melzar married Huldah Clark in 1824, moved to Wisconsin in 1848, remarried Eleanor Wharry in 1852. He has 10 children listed: Esther, Harlow, Polly, Emily, Daniel, William, Chauncey, Albert, Alfred, Miranda.
