From Holland St.John - "William was the youngest son of John II and Amanda (Lucas) Freeman and was born on February 24, 1842 on the family farm located near Porter, Rock County, Wisconsin. At the age of twelve he moved with his family to Sperry Township, Clayton County, Iowa where his father established a farm four miles south of the hamlet of Volga City, Iowa. The U S Census of 1860 records that William was living with his uncle Archibald Freeman and family, helping out as a farm hand. He was listed as being eighteen years of age and that he had attended school that year. Also living on the farm were Archibald's in-laws, Justus and Rhoda King and their two teenage children: Rufus and Dianna. William enlisted in the Sixth Iowa Cavalry, Company C at the age of twenty, September 22, 1862; residence Volga City, Iowa; mustered September 22, 1862; mustered out October 17, 1865, Sioux City, Iowa. William was in General Sully's Expedition, and his brother Orrin also served in the same unit. In 1868 he went to Larwill, Whitley County, Indiana which is located about thirty miles west of Fort Wayne, Indiana. It was here on August 8, 1868 that he married Naomi King. She was the daughter of Alvin Hyde and Mary A. (Dimick) King. She was born July 2, 1847 in Medina County, Ohio. The move to Whitley County most likely was based on the fact that the parents of Naomi had established a farm one-half mile north of Larwill and William determined it would be a fine place for him to develep a farm and raise his children. Five of his six children were born there: John Alvin, Mary Ann, Nettie May, Alvin Hyde and Robert Joseph. Their daughter Myrtle B. was born in Clayton County, Iowa. William became a member of the G.A.R. of Larwill. He was a Good Templar of Volga, Iowa. He was pensioned. The U. S. Census of 1900 reveals the following: William was farming near Larwill, Whitley County, Indiana; he was fifty-eight years of age and had been married thirty-one years. Living at home were his wife Naomi (52, born in Ohio, both parents born in New York), Nettie (26, single, born in May of 1874 and listed as "servant"), Myrtie B. (21, single, born in September of 1878,"servant"), Alvin H. (16, born in October of 1884, farm laborer) and Robert J. (12, born May of 1888, farm laborer). One source mentions that Nettie was born November 13, 1874 and Alvin was born August 30, 1884. William, after having moved to Larwill, spent his remaining thirty-three years there. He passed away on January 20, 1902 of dropsy (edema) and is buried at Larwill, Indiana. His wife Naomi died January 16, 1916. Both William and Naomi were laid to rest in the Lakeview Cemetery located in Larwill, Whitley County, Indiana.
