"James H. Berry, 92, of Lampasas died Aug. 3, 2009, at Rollins Brook Community Hospital. Graveside services were Aug. 5 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas.
Mr. Berry was born Nov. 6, 1916, in Lampasas, the son of H.T. Berry and Victoria Garner Berry. He attended local schools, where he excelled in athletics.
After high school, he moved to Houston to work for a couple of years. He then volunteered for service in the U.S. Army. His military service took him to the Philippines, where he later was captured with a large contingent of soldiers and was held as a prisoner of war.
After his service, Mr. Berry returned to Lampasas and worked in the local Texas Employment Commission office. He later transferred to Taylor and finally to the Bryan office, where he managed that facility until he retired and moved back to Lampasas in 1974.
Mr. Berry enjoyed playing golf and fishing. He was a horticulturist who enjoyed growing all types of things. In addition, he was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lampasas, the VFW and the Hancock Park Men's Golf Association.
Survivors include his wife, Dell Northington Berry of Lampasas; two daughters, Alice Hemphill and husband Joe Pat of Coleman, and Jan Persky of College Station; three grandchildren, Heath Hemphill, Brent Hemphill and Laura Persky; four great-grandchildren, Haigen Hemphill, Joseph Zeno Hemphill, Hadley Baize Hemphill and Ethan James Hemphill; and a sister, Ann Horton of Arizona.
Mr. Berry was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Berry and Elmer Berry.
Memorials may be made to the Lampasas Public Library or First United Methodist Church."
