Regina Berry McCardle Miceli passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2009. Gina (as she was universally known) died at her longtime Bonita Springs home, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.

Gina was born in Atlanta, GA on December 31, 1936. She was the first of eight children born to James Zackary and Neta Belle Colley Berry. She met and married Thomas Alva McCardle in 1954 and they had three children while they lived in the Atlanta area.

In 1964, Gina, Tom and the kids moved to Bonita Springs, where Tom had been born and where his extended family lived. There they enjoyed exchanging the cold north Georgia winters for the sun, sand and beaches of Southwest Florida.

Many in Bonita will remember Gina McCardle for her many years as reporter and managing editor of the Bonita Banner for almost ten years. After that, she and her best friend, May Block, briefly owned and managed the Bonita free weekly paper, The Banyan.

In later years, Gina met many new friends in her work with the new Bonita Springs Water Company, as a dispatcher for the Bonita Springs Sheriff's Department, and as the garden center manager at the Sunshine Ace Hardware Store. When the garden center closed, she took over the UPS shipping department at Ace and finally retired from there after 23 years of service.

After her family and friends, Gina's great love was for all things horticultural. People would marvel at her extensive knowledge and expertise on gardening, landscaping and house plants. She was a certified Florida Master Gardener since the early days of the program and was always ready and willing to help anyone with a question or problem.

Divorced from Tom for many years, Gina met and married Rosario Joseph "RJ" Miceli of Bonita in 1978. He owned an auto dealership and later they started and ran the Bonita Taxi Service together until RJ's death in 1999.

After her retirement, Gina kept up with her gardening, her far-flung kids and grandkids, and could often be found having breakfast with The Bonita Girls. This is a group of longtime Bonita ladies who get together at various local restaurants to share food, fun and stories of family, friends and Bonita Springs.

Gina was predeceased by her parents; all her siblings; and her husband, Rosario "RJ" Miceli; and ex-husband, Thomas Alva McCardle.

She is survived by her three children, Thomasa "Tommi" (Michael Medenis) Martin of Virginia Beach, VA, Stanley (Altis) McCardle of Summerville, SC and Theresa "Teri" (Rick) Wiley of Wheatland, WY. Extended family members are Kimberly "Kim" (Don) McCardle Thomson of Bonita Springs, Debora "Debbie" Candito of Naples, Robert "Bobbie" (Linda) Miceli of Golden Gate and Diane (Greg) Kessler of Naples.

Those who called her "Grandma Gina" included Jourdan Medenis of Virginia, Breanne McCardle of Naples, Jon McCardle Thomson of Cape Coral, Heather and Donny Thomson of Bonita Springs, Aimee McPherson of Illinois, Christine (Rod) Kauffman of Pennsylvania, Rick (Danielle) Wiley of Pennsylvania, Annette (Jeff) Hutson of Pennsylvania, Michele Claps of Connecticut, Crystal Patrick of Michigan, Kendal Landrum of Naples, Danielle Brown of Naples, Christopher Wilson of Cape Coral and Nikki and Morgan Kessler of Naples. Gina also had numerous great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws in Florida and various other states who will greatly miss her.

As was her wishes, Gina will be cremated and laid to rest in the Bonita Springs Cemetery next to her husband, RJ.

A service celebrating her life and loves will be held on Friday, July 17, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home 28300 South Tamiami Trail. Visitation with family and friends will start at 5:00 p.m.

Anyone wishing to make memorial donations are encouraged to contact Hope Hospice of Bonita Springs who made Gina's last days so much more comfortable and the Friends of Gummy, a local pet rescue group which was always there to help Gina with the many homeless cats that seemed to find her over the years.
