Barclay graduated from Lafayette College in Eaton in 1856 and practiced law in Bedford for a few years before going to work in 1863 as personal secretary for Thomas A. Scott, then vice president of the railroad. Scott became the railroad's president in 1874.
Barclay died at his summer home, Mayview, located in Bryn Mawr. His wife, Mary, survived him.
