He was a stone mason and farmer. He served as justice of the peace for the town of German for 36 or more years. He was a member of the Cincinnatus Lodge F. & A. M. for 69 years. Known as "Hi" locally.

Civil War Veteran and One of Oldest Masons in Central New York
Hiland L. Bentley, 97, died yesterday at Lower Cincinnatus following an illness of about a week. Mr. Bentley, who was a Civil War veteran, one of the oldest members of the Masonic order in the state, has made his home in this community for over 10 years. He was born in Vermont, the son of Daniel and Polly Hamilton Bentley, and for most of his life had been engaged in farming. He was a member of Cincinnatus Lodge, F. & A. M, to which organisation he had belonged for 69 years. Besides his wife, Lucetta Bentley, he is survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren. The funeral services will be held on Monday afternoon at 1 from the Baptist Church of Lower Cincinnatus, with the Rev. Otis Fischer officiating. Masonic services will be used. C. B. Heath of Cincinnatus will be in charge of the arrangements.
