"UNKNOWN TRAMP ... Killed by a Freight Train This Afternoon" An unknown tramp was killed on the Erie railroad this afternoon near Erie station in this city. The unfortunate man was riding between cars #37, 174 and 2,673 of Erie Extra freight No. 906. When in front of the depot, the train broke into about middle and the brakeman on the head end set the brakes and slowed the train up. In doing so the rear portion of the train crashed into head end. The tramp was riding between the cars and in the collision he was caught between bumpers and killed. His head was crushed so as to be unrecognizable. He was a large man and wore a dark suit, having a cutaway coat. The train was in charge of Conductor, Cooper and Engineer, Lefter. The body was taken to the morgue. The accident occured shortly after 3 o'clock. Coroner, Flood will hold an inquest at 7:30 tomorrow night in the court house annex.

David F. Hape was identified at the morgue by his wife, Margaret "Maggie" (Whalen) Hape.

Coroner, Flood, "received letters from dead man's sister who lives in Pittsburg and J. M. Hape of Allegheny City, PA, whom the coroner thinks is the man's father."
