D. E. W. SMITH DEAD AT 83
CIVIL WAR VETERAN LIVED IN CARTHAGE 50 YEARS
End Comes While on Visit to Son in Springfield - Funeral to Be Held Here Thursday
Daniel Edward Woodford Smith, 81 years old, a resident of Carthage for 50 years, died last midnight at the home of his son, Wood Smith, in Springfield, where he had gone on a visit. Death was due to paralysis. He had been ill for some time.
Mr. Smith resided at 1000 River Street in this city. His body will be brought to Carthage tomorrow and the funeral will be conducted from Knell chapel at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was a Civil War veteran. He served 3½ years and won the distinction of being promoted from private to lieutenant and then to captain. He enlisted in Company H. 11th cavalry, Kentucky troops in 1861.
Mr. Smith was born in Frankfort, Kentucky December 15, 1836. He was married to Mary Frances Whitehurst in Louisville, Kentucky October 4, 1860. They came to Carthage in 1869. Mr. Smith as lived here continuously since.
Mr. Smith by profession was a contractor and builder. He was a veteran member of the Carthage I.O.O.F. Lodge, having joined in October 1870.
Four children survive, they are;
Dan Smith of Washington, D. C.
Ed Smith of St. Louis
Wood Smith of Springfield, MO
Mrs. Mae Stark of Carthage
Clish Smith of Joplin is a brother.
Mrs. William Overstreet of Bowling Green, Kentucky is a sister
