James Paul Massengill, age 90, a resident of Coalfield, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Massengill was born on Jan. 1, 1920, in Scott County.

He had lived in Coalfield since 1949.

At the age of 22, he entered into the United States Army and served his country in World War II in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes as an expert carbine marksman. While serving, he received several decorations and citations including the EAME Theater Ribbon with five Bronze Stars.

Before his retirement, he was employed as a steel worker in construction.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Gilbert Massengill and Cartia Price Massengill; a son, Don Massengill; and brothers, J.C. Daugherty and David Massengill.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lois Kirkland Massengill of Coalfield; a son, James Owen Massengill and wife, Sharon, of Harriman; grandchildren, Chris Massengill and wife, Alisha, of Kingston, and Wendy Daniel of Cincinnati; and four great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by brothers, Sammie Daugherty and wife, Laverne, of Kansas City, Mo., and Randall Daugherty and wife, Maxine, of Joplin, Mo.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home.

A graveside service will follow at the Estes Cemetery in Coalfield with full military honors.
