Deceased Name: A. D. "DEE" HOWELL, 77

A.D. "Dee" Howell, 77, owner of Hilton Motor Service, and founder of 4-H Light Horse and Pony Club, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, in his home.

Howell was many things to many people, Mystery Santa, concessionaire, horseman and Special Olympics volunteer. But he will probably be most remembered for his devoted ownership of "Jack", a burro who was mascot for the local Democratic Party. Jack rode in the back of a 1951 Cadillac, received haircuts from a local barbershop, and has appeared as an honored guest at first class hotels. The burro has starred in many church nativity scenes, and been loaned to Bluebird Gap Farm and Young MacDonald's Petting Zoo at the state fair in Richmond. Howell and Jack spent many hours with children at Camp Parkitan and Sarah Bonwell Hudgins, providing rides on the burro and other ponies owned by Howell.

In his role as "mystery Santa", Howell dressed up as Santa every year and visited underprivileged children and senior citizens with gifts of candy and stuffed animals purchased with his own money. He never revealed his name and even his four daughters were not aware that Mystery Santa and their father were the same person.

Born in Princeton, N.C., he moved to Newport News during World War II to work for Newport News Shipbuilding. He began working in a local Texaco service station and eventually opened Hilton Motor Service. He has continuously owned and operated the automotive repair shop since 1944 and was still opening his shop every day until Wednesday. The shop will not be reopened.

Howell was an officer of Newport News Horseman's Association and had been active with the association since its formation in 1968. He was an active participant in any activity involving horses, including many local parades such as Denbigh Day Parade. His "surry with the fringe on top" has been used to carry such prominent citizens as Congressman Bateman and Mayor Rattley.

He was a member of Hilton Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Doris Freeman of Princeton, N.C., Jean Parker, and Catherine Childs both of Newport News, and Shirley Wimmer of Los Gatos, Calif.; one sister, Bessie Brown also of Princeton; one foster brother, Leonard Britt, of Princeton; 17 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are incomplete. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to SPCA Humane Society, 533 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News 23601, or Newport News 4-H Light Horse and Pony Club, 108 Main Street, Newport News, 23601.
