Private Freeman Willis, Co. K, 31st North Carolina Troops was wounded on James Island, SC, July 16, 1863, by explosion of a shell. This shell also killed Private W.A. Johnson of the same regiment. In the Army Official Records War of the Rebellion, Vol. 28, Part I, page 589, there is a report that mentions two men of the 31st North Carolina Troops were killed. I verified this by the service records of the 31st North Carolina Troops.
In the Chareston Daily Courier dated Saturday morning July 18, 1863, From the Islands:
"The following wounded soldiers in the action of James Island have been taken to the Trapman Street Hospital....Freeman Willis, Company K, 32nd Georgia, in the thigh." At first this listing of him with the 32nd Georgia made it difficult, as there is no Freeman Willis in the 32nd Georgia at all! It was a mistake in the newspaper. He was indeed a member of the 31st North Carolina Troops.
His official record states: Resided in Cleveland County and enlisted at Camp Holmes at age 38, May 26, 1863, for the war. Wounded in the right thigh at or near Fort Wagner, Charleston, South Carolina, July 16, 1863. Died at Charleston on October 27, 1863. Cause of death not reported.
It is possible that he died from complications of his wound in July.
He was buried in Magnolia Cemetery on October 27, 1863.
