LAFAYETTE METZLER, who is successfully following farming on section 27, Rural township, where he owns and operates two hundred acres of valuable land, was born in Mercer county, Illinois, near Swedona, December 5, 1847. His father, Peter Metzler, was a native of Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, and his grandfather, John Metzler, was also born in that state. The latter came to Illinois in 1843, and died in this state when about eighty-six years of age, having survived his wife for several years. They had a large Family. John Metzler came to this state about 1843, and for some time engaged in the milling business in Richland Grove township, Mercer county. He afterward purchased land and now has one hundred acres, constituting one of the well improved and valuable farms of the community. His wife bore the maiden name of Sarah Cowley, and was a native of Maryland, in which state her father, Branson Cowley, was also born. At an early day he removed to Illinois, but soon afterward removed to Pike county, Missouri, making his home near Frankfort, where he died at an advanced age. Mrs. Metzler passed away August 14, 1895, at the age of Seventy-two years. She was a member of the Methodist church, and Mr. Metzler holds membership in the United
Brethren church. His political support has always been given to the Democratic party.
In the family were six children, five of whom are now living, namely: Elizabeth, wife of John L. Reeves; Lafayette; Branson; Jennie; Hester Ann, wife of Wesley Rhodenbaugh, and Abraham, who died in early
childhood. Lafayette Metzler was reared on the old home farm in Mercer county, remaining under the parental roof until he had attained his majority. To the district schools of the neighborhood he is indebted for his educational
privileges. He continued his residence in his native county until 1880, when he came to Rock Island county and located
in Rural township. In 1887 he purchased his present farm, comprising two hundred and one acres of rich land under a high state of cultivation, and improved with good
buildings. He is a progressive and enterprising agriculturist whose well-directed efforts have brought to him success in his business affairs. On the 24th of February, 1876, Mr. Metzler married Miss Alma Cheney, daughter of William C. and Emily (Sayre) Cheney. Her parents removed from Quincy, Ohio, to Rock Island county, in 1845, and located in Rural township, two miles from the present home of our subject, and there Mrs. Metzler
was born. Her father was a farmer and improved two hundred and twenty-five acres of land in Rural township, continuing its cultivation until his death, which occurred May 19, 1894, at the age of seventy-five years. His wife died on the old homestead, October 8, 1886, at the age of seventy-two. They were members of the Methodist church
and were highly respected people. Their family numbered six children, four of whom are now living: Mary Ellen, wife of Edwin McCartney; Hannah M., wife of Robert Coffee, of Hardin county, Iowa; Alanson P. ; and Mrs. Alma Metzler. The other two, Vincent Sayre and Francis Owen, died in
early childhood. The grandfather of Mrs. Metzler died in Ohio, and her grandmother died in Rural township, Rock Island county. To our subject and his wife have been
born two sons: Jesse Roland and Perrin L. Mr. Metzler is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and gives his political support to the Democracy. He is now serving
as road commissioner and school director and has filled the former office for six years and the latter for ten years. He is deeply interested in all that pertains to the welfare
and advancement of the community and is numbered among the public-spirited citizens whose support is ever given to worthy measures for the public good.
