Cleveland and Mrs. Howard Wright, of Tampa; a brother, Roy Powell, of Greenville; and six grandchildren.
___________________________________________________________

According to the veteran's pension application of Rev. A.R. Powell, Jim Powell lived in St. Louis, MO in 1907. The city directory of St. Louis for that year shows J.H. Powell as a stevedore. He moved to Tampa, Fla. about 1908, where he worked for the City of Tampa as a trolly car conductor, a position held by his brother, Roy Powell, in Savannah, GA, a few years before. While in Tampa, Jim Powell suffered a bout of appendicitus in the Spring of 1908 and was nursed back to health by the wife of his landlord, Mrs. Wm H. Gage.

By late 1909, Jim was situated in Jacksonville, Fla. as a furniture salesman. There he met and married 20 year old Pansy Blossom Renault, daughter of Alfred Renault and Sally Bryan Renault. Pansy was born at Waldo, Fla., on 21 Oct 1889.

The 1910 census of Jacksonville, Fla. shows 26 year old James H. and Pansy B. Powell as residents. The enumerator visited this household on 26 April 1910. The census record shows that the couple had been married less than a year and had no children (although, at the time, Pansy was pregnant with their first child.)

James Harvey and Pansy Blossom Powell's first child, Letha Cleo Powell, was born 2 Aug 1910, Jacksonville, FL.

By 1911, James Harvey Powell had moved his young family back to Berrien Co., Ga. He registerd to vote there with his three brothers.

Jim and Pansy Powell's second child, Elwa Jean Powell, was born in Nashville, Berrien Co., Ga., in 1912. The next year, Jim Powell, shows again on the voter registration list, again, with all of his brothers.

James Harvey Powell is mentioned next in the Valdosta Times as a pallbearer in the obituary of E.L. Moore in 1914. E.L. Moore was a deacon at Cat Creek Bapt. Church and was active in several ministry efforts in Berrien and Lowndes Co., GA.

In June, 1915, a third child, James Leon Powell, was born to Jim and Pansy Powell.

Jim and all of his brothers completed draft registrations for World War I on 12 Sept 1918. Jim indicated that he was 35 years old, born 20 Oct 1882 in Berrien Co., Ga., and cited his profession as a farmer. He was of medium height, slender build, had gray eyes and brown hair (just like his father.)

The last child born to the union of Jim Powell and Pansy Blossom Renault was Thomas Alvah Powell, born 7 July 1918 in Nashville, Ga. The first name, Thomas, came from Jim's father, Thomas William Powell, Sr. and the middle name came from his brother, Rev. Alvah Roy Powell. Of the four Powell brothers, Jim and Roy were best friends, likely because they were closer in age, while John and Will were closer, for the same reason.

In 1919, Jim and Pansy had moved back to Tampa, where Pansy's relatives had removed to. In the 1920 census of Hillsborough County, Fla., Jim & Pansy's family lived at 108 W. Michigan Ave. in Tampa.

The 1920 census shows:

Powell, James H. age 37, GA/GA/GA
Powell, Pansy, age 30, FL/IL/FL
Powell, Letha, age 9
Powell, Elwa, age 7
Powell, Leon, age 4 7/12
Powell, Thomas, age 1 3/12

The 1924 city directory of Tampa, Fla., shows James H. Powell and wife, Pansy, living at 101 W. Francis Ave. Jim Powell was employed as a Police Officer by the city of Tampa. In the 1929 city directory, they were living at 210 Gladys Street.

Jim Powell continued his career as a Police officer with the Tampa police force into the early 1940's. During that time, his two sons, James Leon and Thomas Alvah Powell, were inducted into the U.S. Army for service during World War II. Both, survived the war, returned to Florida, married, and began large families.

During the early years of the War, nephew Wilbur Powell, son of brother Rev. Alvah Roy Powell, moved to the Tampa area, where he met and married Wilhamena Lucille Bellotte. She was from a Lowndes Co., GA family.

About 1942, Jim Powell retired from the Tampa Police force and he moved, along with his wife Pansy, to Jacksonville, Fla., where they both worked at St. Luke's Hospital, Pansy as a nurse & Jim as a maintenance man. About 1948, Jim fully retired to his dream of being a fishing guide on the St. John's River, until his death, on 23 Jan 1949. His death certificate shows his last address was 4445 Beverly Ave. in Jacksonville, Fla., that he was a retired police officer, and was born Nashville, Ga.

Pansy Blossom Renault Powell was a widow for 14 years. The 1956 city directory of Jacksonville shows that she still lived in the same home on Beverly Ave. and served as a nurse at St. Luke's Hospital. She retired from that position in 1960 due to health reasons. She died 20 June 1963 in Tampa, Fla. Her death certificate shows her last address as 10049 Florida Ave., Tampa, FL. The certificate shows that she was born 21 Oct. 1889, to Rueben Renault. The informant was her son, Leon Powell, 121 W. 26th Ave., Tampa, FL.
