John was the fifth of ten known children of George Rothrock (1747-1826) and Elizabeth Myers Rothrock (1751-1827), who married c1770 at presumably Pennsylvania.

John first married to Mary Ann (went by Annie) Keever Rothrock (1784-1822), who married 20 Mar 1806 at Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. John and Annie were the parents of eight known children, all born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, namely:

1. Robert Rothrock (1807-1882)
2. John Rothrock (1808-1820)
3. Margaret Rothrock (1810-1876)
4. Joseph Rothrock (1812-1880)
5. George Rothrock (1814-1816)
6. Mary Ann Rothrock Watkins (1816-1863)
7. Elizabeth Rothrock McColloch (1818-1896)
8. William Rothrock (1821-1895)

Annie died in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania and John remarried to the widow Mrs. Sarah Hopper (c1795-1836) in 1824. The family then moved to White County, Indiana in about 1831.

John was a successful and relatively wealthy farmer and was also a German Baptist Minister in Indiana.
