At age 4 J. S. Walker came to Stephenson Co. from Pennsylvania with his parents, Col. George and Mary (Gamble) Walker. He and his wife were engaged in farming at Rock Grove until 1900 when they moved to Iowa. In addition to his widow he was survived by sons William W., Charley C. & Harry H. and daughters Emma C. Sakman, Stella M. McCauley & Tillie S. Meyer, at whose home he died. Two daughters and a son died in infancy. (Extracted from his obituary, The News Herald, Spencer, Iowa, Aug. 7, 1924)
