He was the son of Phillip Stoner and Elizabeth McMillan. He was the husband of Marie Etta (Barnes) Stoner (1863-1938).

The family was living in Delaware County, Iowa when the Civil War began. Cyrus was a resident of Delhi, Delaware County, when he enlisted as a Private on 23 Sep 1861 at the age of 21. He mustered into Co B 4th Iowa Cavalry on 23 Nov 1861. Cyrus was promoted to Full Corporal on 1 Aug 1862 and to Full 6th Sergeant on 1 Jan 1863. He reenlisted and remustered on 12 Dec 1863. He was promoted to Full 5th Sergeant on 1 Jan 1864 and to Full 2nd Sergeant on 15 Dec 1864. Cyrus mustered out with his company on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.

He returned to Delaware County and on 13 Feb 1867 married Melissa L Dance. They had three children: Mattie Estella Stoner, Lillie Stoner who died at the age of 2 years, and Herbert Stoner. Melissa and Cyrus divorced between 1895 and 1900. Melissa died in 1922 in Earlville, Delaware County.

In the 1900 Census Cyrus, age 57, was a boarder at the home of Robert Shaw and family. Robert was married to Etta Marie Barnes and they had two children: Franka L Shaw and LeRoy Eugene Shaw. Etta and Robert Shaw were divorced between 1900 and 1902. Robert remarried in 1905 and had six more children.

In 1902, Cyrus married Etta, who was 23 years younger. By 1910, Cyrus, Etta, and her children were living in Spokane, Washington.

Cyrus died in Spokane on 1 Mar 1928 at the age of 87 years 5 months. Etta died in Spokane ten years later at the age of 74 years.
