Carrie Beatrice "Bea" Lancaster Ratcliff, 95, of Baton Rouge, La., died Feb. 24, 2010, at her home. Visitation is 8:30 a.m. Monday at Istrouma Baptist Church, 10500 Sam Rushing Drive, Baton Rouge, until services there at 10 a.m., conducted by Dr. Ferris Jordan. A graveside service will be at Hollywood Cemetery in McComb at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Ratcliff was born Oct. 25, 1914, in Brookhaven.

She was raised in McComb and made her home in Baton Rouge for the past 69 years.

Affectionately known to family and close friends as "Mama Bea," she was intensely proud of her 11 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. She was a faithful and active member of Istrouma Baptist Church for the past 50 years, joyfully participating in Keenagers, WMU and helping serve lunch to Louisiana State University students at the Baptist Student Union twice a year, always providing her famous homemade sweet tea. Close to her heart was the special education class, a ministry she felt called to do and which she participated in for 35 years.

She spent the last 15 years at Village Woods retirement community, where she participated in many activities. Her friends will certainly miss her at the potluck dinners, where they often requested her home-cooked mustard greens. She was a member of the Village Woods Red Hatters and gave fun parties in the clubhouse. She enjoyed the sewing club on Saturdays and exercising in the swimming pool with friends during the summer. At age 90 she became a trend-setter when she purchased a three-wheeled exercise bike and boasted of the two-mile trek she regularly took around the property. Other residents followed suit and joined in the fun. Her years there were a shining example of life lived to the fullest.

Mrs. Ratcliff was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John Wesley Ratcliff Sr.

She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sandra Gourrier, and Jeanie Lynn Bondy and David, all of Baton Rouge, and Nancy Smith and Tommy of Natchez; and one son and daughter-in-law, John Wesley Ratcliff Jr. and Susan.

The family thanks Joyce Martin for the loving care she provided and the caregivers, especially Nettie Green, at Hospice of Baton Rouge. Pallbearers will be Britt Bloodworth, Chad Bloodworth, Clay Bloodworth, Trent Bondy, David Bondy and Camron Breeden. Honorary pallbearers are Tommy Smith, John Fabre, David Fabre and Sam Allgood.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of Baton Rouge or Istrouma Baptist Church.
