Jefferson Henthorn was 30, and living in Trenton, Henry Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. D of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct 20, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 25, 1861.

During the term of his enlistment, Henthorn was promoted to 8th Corporal on June 30, 1862; to 7th Corporal; on Dec 19, 1862; to 6th Corporal on March 1, 1863; to 4th Corporal on Jan 19, 1864; and finally to 3rd Corporal (Musician) on May 1, 1864. He was later reduced to the ranks on June 10, 1864, for unstated reasons.

He was mustered out of the service on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta with the rest of his company.

Henthorn's wife applied for her widow's pension on Jan 4, 1892. Her application is #536,865, and her certificate #840,490.
