John was a son of Robert A. and Sally (Baer) Foresman. In 1833 his family moved near Lafayette, IN. On 4-5-1855 he married Minerva C. Davis. They rented a farm in Tippecanoe Co. for 6 years. They bought a farm in 1861. In 1872 they bought a farm in Iroquois Township, Newton Co., IN. This was east of the town of Foresman. He established the first tile factory in Newton Co. on his farm. His brother, William, joined him in the business in 1880. He was Iroquois Township Trustee from 1876-1880. He was one of the first directors of the Chicago and Indiana Southern Railroad. They moved to Brook in 1901. He was 97 when he died. John and Minerva had 12 children: William Davis, Frederick R., Sarah (Sallie), Alice, Ida, Mary, Martha L., Jeanette, Fannie M., Jessie, John Baer Jr., and Frank.
