Mary Ann was born in either Medina or Summit Co. OH. She was the daughter of Chauncey Gilbert and his first wife Nancy Taylor. Chauncey remarried in NOv 1830 so it is assumed that Nancy died before that date. There appear to have been no other surviving children born to Nancy and Chauncey.

Mary Ann left Summit Co. OH and purchased land in Eaton Co. MI in 1876. Joseph joined her sometime later. Joseph left MI with his eldest son Chaauncey shortly after Mary Ann's death. He is said to have died "in the west." The date and place of his death has not been found.
