In 1837 in Canfield, Ohio, Columbia Lancaster married Rosannah Jones, the daughter of Thomas Jones and Sarah Wilson. After one aborted wagon train in 1842 because his infant daughter died and his wife Rosannah was ill. Columbia Lancaster in 1847 was the Captain of another wagon train in which he brought his wife along and they arrived in Oregon City, Oregon in September 1847 and Columbia Lancaster, because he was a well known and well liked lawyer was appointed Supreme Judge of the Provisional Government. In 1849 the family moved from Oregon City to his Donation Claim of 644.24 acres of land on the banks of the Lewis River in Clark County, Washington Territory (it was Oregon Territory until 1852). Eventually he built a big lovely house that is now on the National Historical Register. In 1854 Judge Lancaster was a delegate to Congress from Washington's first Territoral Convention and while in the Capitol he negotiated the purchase by the U.S. Government to purchase all possession and property of the Husdon's Bay Company held in the United States.
