David was serving on the submarine USS Tulibee which was accidentally sunk by its own torpedo off the Palau Islands. He was awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

Note: Submitted information indicates David was born on 7 August 1910 in Pawnee City, Pawnee County, Nebraska and died 26 March 1944, which contradicts the cenotaph.
