Mr. Jake Briles, 89, of Okeechobee, Fla., formerly of Lebanon, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at Hospice of Okeechobee in Okeechobee.
One of eleven children, he was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Covington, to the now-deceased Bernard E. and Mary Elizabeth (Hall) Briles. He was reared and educated in Crawfordsville.
Mr. Briles served in the United States Army during World War II as a staff sergeant.
He was stationed in Europe, and served with Battery A, 530th Anti Aircraft Artillery Air Warning Battalion. He was decorated with the EAME Theater Ribbon, along with five Bronze Stars.
He married Naomi Ruth Woodard on Jan. 25, 1951, in Lafayette. Mrs. Briles died on March 23, 1995.
In Lebanon, he worked in the tire business at State Wide Garage and Montgomery Ward Tire Center, before he started Jake Tire Service. He operated the tire store 15 years with his wife, until they retired and moved to Okeechobee in 1978.
Mr. Briles enjoyed his family, work and NASCAR.
He was a life-member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include a daughter, Delores "Dilly" (Larry) Perryman of Lebanon; two grandchildren, Joe Perryman of Lebanon and Tina Ramillo of Frankfort; and six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Two sisters also survive, Catherine Jane Thomas of Tampa, Fla., and Doris Jean Doss of Covington.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Briles was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Louise Briles, and siblings, Sam Briles, Thelma M. Woertz, Guy F. Briles, Elsie M. Thomas, Bernice Johnson, Glen Briles and Mary E. Newlin.
His ashes will be buried on Monday, Dec. 19, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
No visitation is planned.
