Edward George "Ed" Lohide, 82, of near East Enterprise, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at the Swiss Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Vevay.

He was born Nov. 6, 1927, in Switzerland County, the son of Lawrence K. and Minnie P. Sanders Lohide. He was raised on the family farm near East Enterprise where he attended elementary school and was a 1945 graduate of Vevay High School. He served in the Army from Feb. 14, 1946, to July 29, 1947, rising to the rank of Private First Class. He served in Company B, 58th Signal Battalion as a cryptographic technician in Japan. In 1951, he and his wife purchased a farm near East Enterprise, where they farmed and ran a dairy operation. He began his career in soil conservation in 1951 in Switzerland County as a technician. He was employed in 1956 with the Ripley County Soil Conservation as a soil conservationist technician and retired in 1982, after 26 years of service. He was employed as a technician for the Department of Natural Resources for the T By 2000 Program, for the State of Indiana, from 1988 to 1991. He was a member of the Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion and the Vevay Post 5396 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed a hard days work, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Ruth Facemire Lohide, whom he married Feb. 17, 1951; two daughters, Georgia Lee Bandy of Sunman and Mona Carol Vickroy of Brookville; one son, Mark Lohide of near East Enterprise; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Louise Gayle, who died March 23, 2003; and two brothers, Charles E. Lohide, who died Oct. 13, 2006 and Karl F. Lohide, who died Oct. 24, 2004.

The funeral was at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Rising Sun New Cemetery. Military honors were conducted graveside by the honor guards of the Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion and the Vevay Post 5296 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
