"PASSES AWAY AT 96.
LONG AND USEFUL LIFE COMES TO A CLOSE.
At the remarkable age of 96 years, John R. Schlabach died of a complication of ailments, following a stroke, at 4:15 p. m. Tuesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Caroline Fry, 219 Reed street. Deceased, who had been ailing a year, was only bedfast one week. Since last February he was confined to a chair. Prior to that he had enjoyed good health, despite his age, and was able to visit friends. The only previous illness was an attack of rheumatism when he was a young man.
Mr. Schlabach was born in Lancaster county and for years worked in that section as a cooper, basket maker and carpenter, until 12 years ago, when his wife, Rebecca (Airing) [sic] Schlabach, died. For two years following her death he resided with a son, Wayne, who then lived at Cedar Top. Later, for one year, he made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Kate Johnson, in Shillington. Since then he has resided with a daughter, Mrs. Fry, at whose home he passed away. For six years he resided in Virginia.
Deceased was one of the oldest members of the Muddy Creek Reformed Church. He followed various celebrations held in Berks county with a great deal of interest and, being fond of reading articles of his boyhood days, was greatly interested during the 175th Anniversary.
Surviving are three daughters, Rebecca, Widow of Edward Drybread, Lancaster county; Caroline, widow of Henry Fry, at whose home he died, and Kate, widow of John E. Johnson, Reading; a son, Wayne, Fritztown; 21 grand, 28 great and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Deceased was the last of his immediate family."
NOTE: Wife Rebecca's maiden name is (Ehring)
