Mrs. Dowd, 52, of Charlotte, after a long and courageous fight died Sunday, October 18, 2009 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born in Pottstown, PA on March 19, 1957, she was a 1975 graduate of South Mecklenburg High School and a long-time Charlotte resident. JoAnn worked in the medical profession for 20 years. She was an artist and taught Sunday school at Myers Park Baptist Church.
JoAnn was a wonderful wife and loving mother.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 32 years, Brodie Griffith Dowd; two children, Jessica Lauren Dowd and Parker Griffith Dowd; and Parker's fiancee, Whitney Keane, all of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her mother, Katron Sloan, her father, Elmer Sloan and her mother-in-law, Gail Griffith Dowd.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the nurses of 6 Tower, Dickson Heart, and Progressive Care at CMC, who fought by JoAnn's side for more than six months.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2009, in the foyer of Heaton Hall at Myers Park Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow in the sanctuary at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2009.
The family asks that contributions in JoAnn's memory be made to The KDH Hodgkins Disease Foundation at www.hodgkinsfoundation.org.
