Thomas M. Collins was baptized Michael Collins, on 4 March 1837, by a Catholic priest in Knockeen Parish, District of Rathcormac in County Cork, Ireland. His sponsors were John Twomy & Julia Leary.

He came to the U.S. with his six siblings and parents John & Catherine (Curtin) Collins in 1844. They farmed in New York for 8 years and then moved to Iowa.
