VICTORIA CIVIC LEADER HENRY SASSMAN, 66, DIES
Henry Sassman, charter member and first chairman of Victoria Planning Commission and a long-time Victorial businessman, died at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday after suffering a heart attack on Tuesday.
A native of Creedmor, Tex., Sassman came to Victorian in 1928. He was born Nov. 14, 1903, the son of Thomas H. and Leonora Boring Sassman.
He was the owner of Sassman Business Machines, and had served as president of the state dealers association and as a director of the national association. In addition, he had served as a director of Victoria Chamber of Commerce, the board of governors of Executives Dinner Club, and was a past president of Downtown Lions Club.
He was a veteran of World War II and a member of First Methodist Church and the American Legion.
Sassman was appointed to the city planning commission when it was organized in 1957 and selected by fellow members as the first chairman. He served in this capacity for six years before retiring voluntarily from the board.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. from Colonial Funeral Home with the Revs. Gerald canon and Gerald Thurman officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery with R. K. Tarpen, A. R. Baumgardner, S. G. Hall, John Stalcup, W. R. McCright, W. L. Morgan and Earl Brooks as pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Stella Sassman; a son, Avril of Port Lavaca; a sister, Mrs. Beaulah Burkland of Austin, three brothers, Wesley, Brooks and Earl Sassman, all of Austin; and three grandchildren.
