Cynthia Alice Fanning was born in Morgan County, IL, the daughter of James Franklin and Mary Ann Hill Fanning. She moved with her parents to Kansas as a child. On November 28, 1886 she married Charles R Short, and in 1887 they had a daughter, Minnie Pearl. Charles and Cynthia divorced and she later moved to Florida where she married Oscar David Hollis.
