Walter Sanders Russell, called "Sanders," was the son of Israel Pickens Russell, Jr., and Katherine Rebecca Sanders. At the age of 15, he entered the world of professional horse racing in 1915. After sixty seasons of active participation, including driving sulkies, he was inducted into the Living Hall of Fame of the Trotter in Goshen, New York. He was also inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and served as a director of the United States Trotting Association which governs harness racing in the United States.
One highlight of Sanders' career was winning the 1962 Hambletonian Stakes with A. C. Viking, a horse he had trained. The Hambletonian, a three heat event with the same horse on the same card, is the major event of harness racing and is referred to as the "Kentucky Derby" of harness racing. "Racing News" reminded readers that Walter drove the three races with an injured foot.
Walter was involved with other famous horses, among them, Hal Tryox, Cardigan Boy, and Fresh Yankee. Dart Hanover, another famous horse he trained, won the 1972 Prix de Amerique, Europe's largest and most prestigious trotting race held in Paris, France, and many other American events.
Walter married Evelyn Caperton Willis. They had two sons, Walter Sanders, Jr., and Henry Bosworth.
