Walter Sanders Russell, called "Sanders," was the son of Israel Pickens Russell, Jr., and Katherine Rebecca Sanders. At the age of 15, he entered the world of professional horse racing in 1915. After sixty seasons of active participation, including driving sulkies, he was inducted into the Living Hall of Fame of the Trotter in Goshen, New York. He was also inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and served as a director of the United States Trotting Association which governs harness racing in the United States.
