H. L. Atwell, 92, died late Friday at the Bethany Home for Men in Millen after a long illness. The Jefferson County native had lived in Statesboro since 1925. He was the owner of the Hodges-Atwell Bakery and a retired farmer. He was a member of Statesboro First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie Lou B. Atwell, Statesboro; two stepchildren, Frank B. Richardson and Jane R. Fulmer, both of Dallas, Texas; one brother, Royce Atwell, Wrens; three stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Smith-Tillman Mortuary, with the Rev. Hugh Davis and Elder John Sheldon Mikell officiating. Burial will be in the Eastside Cemetery.
