Benjamin Dolbeare was born in Connecticut to George Benjamin Dolbeare. He married Mary/Maria Jane Marteney, May 13, 1824, Randolph County, Virginia before West Virginia statehood. Benjamin and Maria J appear on the 1850 census, Harrison County, Virginia/WV, where he is a physician, with daughter Martha 22. They also had son Lorenzo Dow Dolbeare born abt 1825 who became a doctor and died 1885. Benjamin's widow died in 1869 Harrison County, WV. She may be buried her with him. Her parents are William Sanford Marteney and Eunice Eastburn both born in Maryland.According to the book, 'West Virginia in History, Life, Literature and Industry, Vol II,' by Morris Purdy Shawkey published in 1928 page 454: "Dr. Benjamin Dolbeare was one of the foremost editors, writers, physicians of his time. He was owner and editor from May 30, 1840 to the date of his death June 7, 1854 of the Clarksburg Virginia, the Clarksburg Democrat, the Scion of Democracy and the Independent Democrat."
