Benjamin was a stonemason in Hoyesville, Virginia who served in the 56th Virginia militia in 1859 and voted against secession. He had $200 damage during the 1864 burning raid and his property was assessed at $28,000 in 1870.

In 1839 Benjamin married Rebecca (maiden name listed as Grubb) and had three children. By 1850 Rebecca and her children were dead and Benjamin was living on his land with several unrelated people. In 1857 he remarried to Margaret Ann Orrison in Lovettsville and had eight children.
