"Charles A. Cates served as a pilot in the 5th Army, stationed in the Pacific area. He flew 64 combat missions in a B-25. He named his plane, "Sweet Miss El" for his wife. On V. J. Day, Charles was stationed at Memphis Air Force Base. He had orders to fly a transport plane to a northern base and consequently missed the Memphis Victory Parade. Charles was discharged ranked as a Captain in the U. S. Air Force."
