She married Lewis Wilson Scott on July 27, 1934, & made their home near Anadarko & Cyril. They farmed for many years before Lewis got a job in the oilfield. It was then that Ellen decided that there was an easier way to make a living & started sewing for the public. She eventually took some college classes in Chickasha at O.C.W. & became a dietician to the Cyril Nursing Home from which years later she retired.
Ellen was a homemaker for the larger part of her life, enjoyed sewing, quilting & crocheting in what spare time she had. She & Lewis provided a home for many people who needed a place to stay. Her door was always open & food was plentiful. She & her husband took 2 great grandsons, John Stewart, 4 & Jayeen, 3, to be raised in their home. When Ellen went to work at the nursing home, the residents there would say, "We'll have some good food today." Anytime you went to her house for a meal, it was one that you would not go away from hungry. She was one of the greatest coos in Oklahoma; several can testify to that.
Ellen was a charter member of the Midway Baptist Church (which was first known as the Tonkawa Mission) of Cyril where she worked for many years in the kitchen during bible school. She was also the bookkeeper to her Sunday school class for many years. The Tonkawa Mission was once the Tonkawa County School from which Ellen graduated from the 8th grade.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lewis, in December 1983, 3 brothers, 4 sisters, 1 son, 2 grandsons, 1 great granddaughter, & 2 great-great grandsons.
Ellen is survived by one daughter, Isabell Lingle & her husband, Dearl of Cyril; one daughter-in-law, Miriam (widow of Charles Scott), of Cement; 2 sons, Clifford and his wife, Alice & Clayton Scott & his wife, Jo, both of Cyril; one sister, Geneva & her husband of Cement; 10 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren & a host of nieces, nephews & friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Midway Baptist Church Building Fund. These can be made at the Cyril State Bank "In Memory of Ellen Scott".
Funeral services will be at 10 A.M. Tuesday, November 8, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Cyril with the pastor of Midway Baptist Church, Don Wright, officiating. Burial will follow in the Celestial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of the Steverson Funeral Home.
