Steve was baptised in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Westphalia, Missouri. He attended a neighborhood public school known as the Bexton School, he also had additional schooling at St. Peter's High School in Jefferson City.
As a young man he worked at home on the farm, and later as a farm hand in Illinois for some of his relatives (the John Peter Bode family).
He married Johanna Mary Koetting on Aug. 7, 1907 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos, MO. They had 10 children.
Stephen's brother Henry Bode married Johanna's aunt Wilhelmina Rehagen, and his sister Elizabeth Amalia married Johanna's uncle Frank Rehagen. Thus leading to the intricate intertwining of the Bode and Rehagen Families.
