ARTHUR LAVERNE BENDER
June 19, 1935 - May 5, 2010
Art (Chubby) passed away peacefully with family by his side at the General Hospital in Regina. Art is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean. His children: Terry (Edith), Brenda, Victor, Susan (Rick), Patricia, Doug (Jan), Jaquline (Keith); 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and his buddy Cuddles; his siblings: Janet (Keith), LaRoyd (Lynn), Ron (Rosalie), Leon (Elaine), Stewart, Mary Lou, Linda (Bill) and their families from Ontario; and 5 brothers and sisters-in-law and their families also from Ontario. Art was predeceased by his parents Ervin and Rachel Bender, 2 sons-in-law Ben Amosah and Alain Sauve, grandson Kirby Mealing and great-grandson Terell Amosah. Arts first love was his family. He started working on the home farm at a very early age in Tavistock, Ont., this led to a career in trucking from coast to coast and the formation of Bender Transport. Auctioneering began in 1964 in Holstein, Ont. until his last sale in Avonlea in 2009. He also owned a Chrysler dealership in Carnduff from 1984-1989. Art and Jean founded Chubby's in Belle Plaine in 1990 where he earned his name 'Chubby'. They moved to Moose Jaw in 1996. His name will live on!! Art loved driving the bus for the Carnduff Red Devils and the Avonlea Arrows to their hockey games. He was a true entrepreneur - his friendships were many. A Celebration of Art's life will be held at the Avonlea United Church on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 1.30 pm. Marilyn Keerak will officiate. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held Monday, May 10 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. The family would like to thank the doctors and the nursing staff on 6F for the wonderful care they provided. Memorial donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 917 Albert St., Regina, S4R 2P6, or to the Canadian Liver Foundation, Box 1943, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 3R2, would be appreciated.
