MELVA JOYCE SHRAKE, 81, born in Houston to August and Maggie Matejek on May 25, 1923, and went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 23, 2006. A loving, sweet, and wonderful Christian lady that never met a stranger and greeted everyone with a hug. She was a member of Park Place Church of Christ and a retired H.I.S.D. elementary school teacher who taught 33 years. She taught at Rufus Cage, Lora B. Peck, and Judd Mortimer Lewis Elementary Schools. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Gamma Chapter; Houston Association of Retired Teachers; Kappa Delta Pi; and a life member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, Texas Classroom Teachers Association, Texas State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. She is survived by her husband, of 56 years, Henry L. Shrake, Jr.; mother, Maggie Matejek; nephew, Wayne A. and wife, Pat; cousins; brothers-in-law, Bryan S. and wife, Muriel, Vernon, British Colombia, Canada; and Gordon S. and wife, Lee, Calgary, Alberta, Canada and cousins. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 26, 2006, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at SouthPark Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 27, 2006 at SouthPark Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Coy Day, officiating. Interment to follow at SouthPark Cemetery.
