Joseph Henry Curtis, who usually went by his middle name, Henry, may have been born either in 1843 or 1844, and his place of birth may have been Golden (or Golden Point), Adams County, Illinois or Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. He was the eighth child (of ten) of Benjamin Gardner Curtis and Maria Dunn. By October 1, 1852, the family arrived in Springville, Utah.

Henry Curtis married Harriet Lucinda Whiting in Salt Lake City on November 30, 1867. They were the parents of 11 children, born between 1868 and 1889. They lived at various times in Springville, Mapleton and near Manti (and the Hobble Creek Canyon), Utah, as well as Brigham City and St. Johns, Arizona. Harriet had died by early 1899, and around 1900 or soon after, Henry and those children still at home moved to Robin, about 30 miles south of Pocatello, Idaho.

On April 28, 1902, Henry Curtis married Matilda Gwendolyn Marley, and they had two children by October 1905.

Henry Curtis was a farmer. His eldest child, Harriet (known as "Hattie Evans" after she married), called her father, who played the violin, "a man with a wonderful talent. He could always appreciate the finer things, was always willing, and did give much of his time for the entertainment of others."
