She was the daughter of Joseph Pender Askew and Lora Eufrasia Merrell Askew of Carrollton, GA. She was married to Phillip J. Schwarz of Atlanta. He preceded her in death in 1983 shortly before celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Martha Kathryn Askew Berry, Vivian Elizabeth Askew Peacock and Lora Edwina Askew Henning; brother, Joseph Durham Askew; nieces, Sarah Askew Jordan and Mary Elizabeth Potter; nephew, Edward Joseph Henning.

She is survived by niece, Martha Berry Reeve and her husband, Alex of St. Augustine, FL, niece, Helen Phillips Henning, wife of deceased nephew, Edward Joseph Henning; niece, Sharon Connor of Mabelton, GA and niece, Judy Brown of Cartersville, GA, She also leaves behind many great nieces and nephews. She and her husband both worked for the Seaboard Railroad and lived in Savannah, GA, Hamlet, NC and Raleigh, NC before moving to Atlanta in 1972.

Gertrude was a member of Druid Hills Baptist Church in which she was very active for many years.
