Robert joined the King William Artillery in 1861. On 18 September 1862, he became a member of H Company Ninth Virginia Cavalry. In May and June of 1863 he was guarding prisoners. In September and October that same year, he was on detached service as a nurse. He was captured and incarcerated as a prisoner of war at Point Lookout from March of 1864 through his release on 17 June 1865. He was a Virginia legislator postwar.
